RICHMOND, N. J.— Propecia® has been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of male pattern baldness and for the treatment of an enlarged prostate.
Propecia® is the generic name for the drug finasteride, a 5α-reductase inhibitor. Finasteride works by reducing the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair loss in men. Propecia® has been used for over a decade to treat male pattern baldness.
The drug was first approved by the FDA in 1997. Since then, it has become one of the most well-known medications in the world for treating hair loss.
"In the world of hair loss treatments, finasteride has been approved by the FDA to treat male pattern baldness, which is the most common form of hair loss in men," said Peter B. Rothbaum, clinical professor at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and director of Propecia's clinical studies program.
According to a news release, the drug "has been found to be safe and well-tolerated in patients with mild to moderate hair loss who were randomized to receive finasteride or a placebo for six months."
According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, "The majority of the patients in the study were men aged between 41 and 50 who had been diagnosed with male pattern baldness at least once in their lifetime and had not yet had their hair treated."
Researchers found that men who were prescribed finasteride experienced significant improvement from the initial dose. After six months, the average weight loss was only about 4.9 pounds.
"The data suggest that finasteride has a relatively small potential benefit for male pattern baldness," said Dr. Rothbaum. "The data also suggests that the effect of finasteride on hair loss may be small, but it should be clinically important for patients to receive this drug and not to stop taking it."
According to a statement by Propecia, "This review focuses on the potential side effects of Propecia® and is designed to highlight the importance of continuing to monitor patients for any adverse effects."
